to contents ↑What is a canopy?
The word "canopy" came to the Russian language from Italian along with the subject itself. However, in Europe, a piece of cloth, designed to protect the sleeping from the noise and bustle of the world, came from the East. The word "canopy" and means "Baghdad."
In those days, canopies hung in the bedrooms of noble nobles. In Asian countries, cloth could also be seen above the throne. This was of practical importance - it was necessary to protect the lord from the hot southern sun. But the Europeans also adopted this fashion, where the drapery over the throne not only gave a shadow, but rather signified the high status of the one sitting under it.
Important! Canopies were sewn from expensive materials - silk, brocade or velvet, decorated with embroidery. A canopy with a coat of arms is almost an obligatory part of the count or royal bedroom, and sometimes there are so many precious stones sewn that would be enough for a good estate.
Four-poster beds could be seen in the bedrooms of ordinary citizens, but the fabrics were simpler and the decorations more modest. This tradition has not completely disappeared even now. Adult canopy beds can still be found on sale, and a piece of light fabric over the baby’s bed is the most common phenomenon that even not very wealthy families can afford. Before installing the canopy on the crib, you need to decide whether you need it or not, and choose the right model.

This cute little thing is able to please mom, cause emotion from grandmother and neighbors, but is the baby needed it? Despite the fact that the children's canopy is very similar to the decoration, which has no practical value, some pediatricians still advise using it.
What for?
- The use of a canopy prevents insects from entering the crib.
- This simple device reliably protects the baby from dust.
- The fabric gives a shadow, even if the bed is near a brightly lit window.
- Canopy creates an obstacle for drafts.

How to choose a canopy?
Canopy models differ in several ways:
- tissue;
- length
- mounting method.
What is it made of?
On sale you can find models of cribs already equipped with a canopy. You just have to assemble the structure and fix the canopy on the crib.
What is the cloak made of? Now a variety of fabrics are used:
- natural silk;
- rayon;
- thin cotton;
- thin linen;
- organza;
- tulle;
- synthetic fabrics.
Natural canvas
Natural delicate materials are great for the baby. They are environmentally friendly, do not cause allergies, do not interfere with the penetration of air, and in addition, they are quite beautiful.
Important! An excellent option is organza, which not only does not harm health and decorates the room, but also dries quickly after washing, which can not be said about cotton or linen.
Synthetics - not good
It hardly makes sense to choose synthetic materials like nylon or even rayon. Unfortunately, such models can be found on sale, but most often they are made by inexperienced mothers with their own hands.
Such material, of course, protects against drafts, but only because air does not penetrate the crib at all. Even such positive qualities as a spectacular appearance and ease of washing and drying do not compensate for this drawback.
Choose color
For the manufacture of such items light fabrics are usually used. It is necessary to consider:
- gender of the child;
- room style;
- your own preferences.
Important! There is a tradition of painting objects for boys in blue and for girls in pink. But no one forces you to do just that. You can select neutral tones.
Girl are more suitable:
- cream;
- peach;
- soft purple.
A canopy for a boy can be:
- beige;
- grayish;
- light green.
But there are no strict recommendations on this subject. As for white, it suits absolutely everyone. And there is always the opportunity to choose a fabric with a pattern - in a small flower, with images of toys, etc.
Important! In any case, variegation and too dark materials should be avoided. Variegated objects excite and distract, and dark colors contribute to the onset of depression.
Talk about length
Manufacturers offer children's canopies of various sizes. Among them you will find those that cover only the top of the crib and partially the sidewalls, but there are also very long models that go down to the floor. They, of course, are beautiful, but are they practical?
The short option is more convenient in every respect:
- You can quickly lift it if you need to approach the child;
- You do not risk in a hurry to get entangled in the fabric;
- the smaller the piece of fabric, the easier it is to wash, and the faster it dries.
So a long canopy is appropriate only when the room is very large. For all other rooms, medium and short models are suitable.
to contents ↑Mounting a canopy on a crib
The canopy covers the top and sides of the crib. He hangs over the bed, but where from? On sale you can find models with two types of mounts:
- Ceiling. Installed permanently. This option is suitable if the crib has a permanent place, for example, in the nursery or next to the parent's sofa in the common room. With any rearrangement, you will have to remove the canopy and re-mount.
- On a tripod. The canopy on the tripod is mobile, it can be moved around the apartment and even carried out onto the street. This is true if, for example, you live in the country all summer, the baby has already grown up from a recumbent stroller and sleeps either in the room, then on the veranda, or even in the garden.
Determine the place
Before attaching the canopy to the crib, you need to determine the place where the berth itself will stand. For ceiling models, this does not play a role, since the fastener in any case is mounted in the ceiling (sometimes in the wall). Mounting on a tripod is another matter.
The crib can be located anywhere in the room, but there are only two main options for the location. As a rule, a baby bed is placed near a wall to which it can adjoin:
- long side;
- short side.
In the first case, a tripod with a canopy is placed over one of the sides, in the second - to the back at the head.
Important! The second option is better if you want the baby to get as much air as possible. If, on the contrary, there are drafts in the room, the canopy fixed to the side will give better protection. For country life, both methods are suitable.
What you need?
Before attaching the canopy to the crib, prepare tools and fixtures. You need:
- screwdriver;
- drill;
- drill;
- bracket.
The bracket, which is usually included in the kit, consists of several parts. You must have:
- 2 tubes (straight and curved);
- 2 staples;
- 2 screws;
- hoop.
If all this is, we proceed to how to properly mount the canopy on the crib. First, the canopy itself needs to be washed, dried and stroked, even if you bought a new one, not a used one. Farther:
- Mark the place where the tripod will be mounted on the side or back.
- Mark the locations for the screws.
- Lay out the bracket elements on a flat surface - the parts are quite large, so you do not need a white sheet.
- Attach the brackets to the straight end of the boom.
- Attach what you did to the marked place.
- Tighten the screws, fixing the structure on the back or side.
- Find the drawstring on the canopy (on the wrong side there is a hole, the same as for underwear in panties).
- Insert a hoop into it.
- Hide the ends of the holder under the cloth.
- Make beautiful builds.
- Connect the hoop to the curved tube.
- Attach the curved tube to the boom.
- Adjust the height.
Do-it-yourself canopy
If the ceiling and tripod mounts do not suit you, you can make a canopy that will be attached to the wall. For this you need:
- wooden frame;
- screwdriver:
- roulette;
- hammer;
- pencil;
- sewing machine;
- sewing supplies.
Materials, of course, must also be prepared in advance. To make and fix the canopy, you will need:
- about 6 m of light natural fabric with a width of 140-150 cm;
- satin ribbons or braid;
- 1 m of wooden timber 40 × 50 mm;
- 2 slats 50 cm long, 20x30 mm thick;
- dowels;
- wood screws
To begin, mark the wall - put a mark over the head of the crib at a height of 1 m, here will be the middle of the bar. Next, proceed so as to secure the canopy to the crib:
- Measure 45 cm in each direction and put two more marks.
- Mark the beam - put a point in the middle and at a distance of 5 cm from each edge.
- Drill holes in the wall.
- Using dowels, fasten the beam.
- Nail or fasten 2 slats to the edges of the timber, which should be at a right angle to the wall.
- Hem the canopy from four sides or process the slices with an overlock.
- Set aside 60-70 cm from the top edge, lay a basting seam perpendicular to the edges.
- Cut a few pieces of tape or braid 25-40 cm long.
- Sew the ribbons in the middle to the seam on the wrong side.
to contents ↑Important! A short part of the canopy pours onto a wooden frame, a long part hangs over the bed, and the ties are needed so that the canopy does not fall. On the perimeter you can make a frill.
Pickup
An excellent decorative element will be pickup. By the way, it is also suitable for a canopy bought in a store. A dense wide braid or tape is suitable for picking up, but you can also make it from a strip of fabric:
- Bend the short edges to the wrong side by 1 cm.
- Iron the folds.
- Fold it in half lengthwise, face out.
- Iron the fold.
- Bend the long edges to the middle and iron too.
- Sew the workpiece around the perimeter with the usual stitch.
to contents ↑Important! Such a pickup can be held on a button, on a button or on a flypaper.
